Philip Marlowe is the private detective in the books Chandler had written in that era. The ability to write, take the reader to the time frame, prosaic statements, visualize the scenes is top rate, but if you are looking for something with a modern twist, there are some elements that may not please you. Take this as a period piece, and you may get some insight into how people thought in than pre- and post-World War Two time, including the author. The plot is so complicated that if it were not for his explanations a couple of times, especially near the end, I might have been totally lost, as opposed to a little. I used to think of mysteries as having some clues dropped along the way enough that a sharp reader would figure it out before the end, and maybe he did, but it is far more complicated than deducing that the “butler did it,” so to speak. My rating on this takes into consideration my remarks above.
