I was astounded by the cinematography, the performances, and the gorgeous score (and this wasn't even the Broadway musical). I love Liam Neeson in general, so I was almost instantly drawn to him in this role. The part where he hit the Bishop did shock me, but I understand where that aggressiveness came from. He's supposed to be a man who has been locked away from civilization, and seems like an animal on the outside; but his goodness becomes more apparent as the movie continues. I thought it was amazing. It moved me to tears, maybe even more than the movie musical did. And for those who said the musical sucked and would have been better off as a movie, well, here it is.
