In the book, Caspian is largely a pawn, being fought over by the characters of the first book and the evil uncle/king of this book. Movie Caspian is distinct, being significantly older, cool, and with a bit of an attitude. He does more than his book counterpart, and that alone makes this movie better than the book. There are some significant action pieces, some witty humor, and the messages of growing up and passing on the torch remain, perhaps even more distinct. They even added some stuff that wasn't in the book, and honestly, I think the movie made the right call. It surprises me to say this, but this movie might be my single favorite Chronicles of Narnia media piece.
