Before he was famous for his crime novels, Elmore Leonard wrote a bunch of western stories and novels, including "3:10 to Yuma" and "Valdez is Coming," both of which were filmed. "The Bounty Hunters," from 1953, was his first novel. It's not as accomplished as his later work, but will be enjoyable for fans of Leonard of the genre. He's a very different writer than Cormac McCarthy, whom the other commentator mentioned, so I'm not sure if a comparison is particularly apt. His western stories are collected in one volume. Suggested pairing: whiskey, mezcal.
