What I loved the most about this phenomenal novel is the voice of Melody and her perseverance in spite of all the limitations forced on her.

Out of my Mind is an excellent book.

One of the most notable aspects of Out of my Mind, written by Sharon Draper, is the impressive internal dialogue and thinking that goes through the main character, Melody. This especially helps because she has cerebral palsy, a condition that might make the audience harder to relate with. However, although most of us will never experience the mistreatment Melody faced, her feelings are conveyed in a way that it makes her viewed as a regular preteen struggling to fit in at school when they are different compared to others. Nonetheless, Draper is able to easily evoke a sense of empathy for Melody. For example, when it gets rather emotional, we understand because it accurately shows Melody’s frustration when people treat her at something less than human. I also found the ending rather clever; it really tied everything together. I believe it’s a good middle school read, as I have read in during seventh grade myself.

Melody has cerebral palsy. Basically, she can’t walk, talk, or move anything except her thumbs, but she’s a genius. She’s smarter than most of the adults she knows and definitely smarter than the kids at school. But, she’s frustrated because she can’t express her thoughts that go through her head. The kids at school dismiss her and her feelings as though she’s mentally challenged, but if there’s anything Melody won’t let happen, it’s being defined by her cerebral palsy, and she makes sure of it by letting everyone know of it.
I’ve recommended to many of my friends as well as my sister, and honestly, no regrets. You learn so much from this novel; gratitude, kindness, being non-judgemental, and so much more. You just get sucked into this book, and the underlying lessons that it can teach us are amazing. It’s also a topic that needs to be conveyed. So many people know so little about CP and I felt that this book did a great job explaining it.
Some things I didn’t like within this book is that it’s a bit unrealistic. There are many factual and scientific things that are wrong with it, and I’m willing to let them slide, however, there were so many stereotypes within it. For example, literally every teacher mentioned in this book is a devil. Every single teacher. I know that there are some teachers out there that are very judgemental but I have seen and had teachers that are so loving and caring, and I just found it very unrealistic, and slightly disrespectful, that they would be portrayed like that.
Other than that, if you’re looking for a good read that is motivational and has a good plot, this book will do that justice.

Excellent book from the perspective of someone with a disability. Shows how we are all the same on the inside, with the same sort of desires and wishes, esp to be included.

Preteen Melody looks at the world through a different lens, and while most people don't take the time to understand her, she's got plenty to say. Readers are encouraged to walk (or ride) a mile in someone else's shoes in order to (just like Melody), see the world through a different lens.

I give this book 5 stars. It’s really interesting how people think Melody isn’t smart but she is smart. Also, I was glad Penny was born perfect. This book is amazing!!!!!!

Out Of My Mind is a book about an eleven year old disabled girl named Melody. Melody is unique, she has something called a photographic memory. So everything that she hears or sees is stuck in her brain without a delete button. Melody is also stuck in a wheel chair, cant talk, and must be fed by someone else. Out of my mind is about Melody getting her chance to speak using her machine, and how her life is and how to adapt.

Being unable to speak, unable to walk, to hug her parents, to tell anybody: I love you. It's hard. Especially when people think you're retarded and your fish commits suicide. Melody has handled it all; but now she has a chance to speak- to be the person she truly is, in a way that will stay with you forever. Read it, love it, and cry: this is an amazing book.

This book is about a girl with a disability that does not let her move her body on her own will and how she over comes that and earns a voice.

Dec 13, 2011

In the book Out of My Mind, Sharon M. Draper writes about an incredibly bright eleven year old girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy. Melody wants so much to be able to communicate with others but is trapped inside by a disability that leaves her a prisoner without a voice. She desperately wants to talk; to show the world that she is actually gifted verbally, with a photogenic memory for words that surpasses that of all her peers. But she cannot, beyond grunting and spastic movements. With the help school assistant, Melody gets a machine that talks for her. With it, she is no longer trapped; she is no longer out of her mind! This machine enables Melanie to do more things and reach new heights. It also brings on more problems. I would highly recommend this book.
