John Flanagan is a writing magician. He casts a spell with his writing, and makes you read his book all the way through. A great third book!

The third installment of the “Ranger’s Apprentice” series and one which shows a vastly different side to the world which have already seen, as it follows directly after the events of the second and grants of an understanding of an entire new area. A place where many modern day morals are ignored and yet others are upheld to the death. It gives us a struggle between characters and shows us how they begin to overcome them, granting more to the characters we already know and showing new sides to those we thought that we did. Overall making this a fantastic third story in the series and proving why this series is a must read for any young reader.

Honestly, I enjoyed this one just as much as the others two books in the series. The plot is engaging and the character development is spectacular. A major part of the book centers around Will’s addiction to a narcotic so just be aware when allowing children to read the book. This could bring up a discussion on addiction.

I agree with most of my fellow commenters that this book is slower-paced than most of its companions, but it is also necessary to lead into the rest of the books. The humor, in my opinion, more than makes up for the lack of constant action, and those who do not value sarcastic commentary should really consider another series. A sarcastic creature at heart, I enjoyed this book immensely, and recommend it to book-lovers who can truly appreciate John Flanagan's wit, rather than to fiction-action-junkies.
