I wonder what she named him in the end

This is a lovely retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and melds the original tale with the Disney version rather sweetly. The writing is...I think graceful is the best word for it. And it's a quick read, as well. I can see why people recommend McKinley's fairytale retellings!

Really enjoyable retelling of this classic tale. Though I admit I found the ending to be rushed and somewhat confusing. Otherwise a great read with a compelling romance.

Without question, the best Beauty and the Beast re-telling I've ever read. The storyline was so charming, and the characterization was amazing. I can't believe how the characters seemed to become real. I thought I really knew them. A book that will stick with me. Definitely one I would highly recommend.

I have read and re-read this novel many times over the years. It is an amazing re-telling of the story of "Beauty and the Beast." I loved every single one of the characters. There was no specific "villain" character, which I enjoyed. I highly recommend this book, especially since the character of Beauty is an unusual heroine for the genre.

This book is why I became a librarian! After watching Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" in the theater (no, we're not going to discuss how old that makes me!), I went to the library to find a book about the same story. I vividly remember typing the title into the computer catalog. I found this book and loved it. And loved it again and again and again.

one of the best enhanced Beauty and the Beast stories

It's been so long since I sat down and read a whole book in one sitting. Beauty captured me from word one. Growing up beauty and the beast had always been my favourite disney movie. Beauty inspired my love with her love of books and her kindness and open mindedness. This book perfectly captured everything I loved about the princess and put it into a story that is a classic on it's own but made better through McKinley's modern retelling. I would truly recommend this book to everyone i know. You will enjoy it. I guarantee it.

“At least I was true. My intellectual abilities gave me a release, and an excuse. I shunned company because I preferred books; and the dreams I confided to my father were of becoming a scholar in good earnest, and going to University. It was unheard-of several shocked governesses were only too quick to tell me, when I spoke a little too boldly -- but my father nodded ans smiled and said, 'We'll see.' Since I believed my father could do anything -- except of course make me pretty -- I worked and studied with passionate dedication, lived in hope, and avoided society and mirrors.”

“As I have said, you have no reason to trust me, and an excellent reason not to.”
