This is the 21st Joe Pickett novel and I hope that C.J. Box is only halfway through the renowned telling of the Wymoming game warden Joe Pickett's unusual life. I won't give away anything here so feel safe to read on. Wyoming has only 578,759 citizens as of 2019 (the fewest in our nation). Saddlestring, Wyoming (Pickett's town) has 2,208 people. I''ve often wondered what life would be like with everyone toting a gun in their car, truck. Wyoming comes pretty close to that scenario. As usual C.J. Box educates the reader about life amongst the wildlife where laws are often an inconvenience. Good story. (The library says this is the 20th Joe Pickett novel but in the section called 'The Making of Long Range' Box himself says it is the 21st book the Pickett series.)

LONG RANGE is the latest in C. J. Box's Joe Pickett novels. As usual Box's story lines have multiple threads running through them. In this one we see the irascible Judge Hewiit, the on-the-grid, off-the-grid Nate Romanowski (and his family), Joe's dreadful mother-in-law, and, of course, Joe himself partnered at the hip with his wife, Marybeth. Joe is awesome game warden who nevertheless always out of sync (in a good way) with some power broker somewhere. In this this case it is the Governor and the new county sheriff. Throw in a drug cartel enforcer and a highly questionable medical doctor and you have the makings of another great read. Joe Pickett is as human as he can be, and is still among the good folks out there.

Once again, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett gets mixed up in a killing where the suspect is his old friend Nate Romanowski. Poor Nate can't catch a break. He just wants to be left alone to train his falcons and help his beloved wife, Liv, raise their baby, Kestrel. (Gotta love that name!) As if that weren’t bad enough, Joe’s haughty, scheming mother-in-law shows up unannounced and trailing troubles of her own. Mr. Box is a writer who always brings his settings to life for the reader and I love losing myself in this series. I very much enjoyed Long Range and I am eager for #21 to be written!!

This is book 20 of the Joe Pickett series. I've read and loved all of them, including this one, but I wouldn't recommend starting with book 20. The series is about Joe's family as much as it is about the murders and other crimes he sees as a Wyoming game warden. Part of the fun is watching as his girls grow up. His marriage faces tremendous stress and grows stronger over the years.
