Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she'd vacation, much less fall in love. But when her family surprises her with a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled-or maybe yanked-away from her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime. Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but he feels most at home in the kitchen. Which is why he lives for the three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to her passion, confidence, and perseverance. But just when Grace dares to dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away. Wrestling with personal demons, Max fights against opening his heart to a love he knows he should never hope for. And as his secrets unfold, Grace is torn between the safe path in front of her and what her heart truly desires. If love means sacrificing her ideal happily ever after, Grace's faith will face its toughest test yet.

The main characters in the book, Grace and Max, make a very compelling story especially the reason Max has for not wanting to get involved - how many times does this happen in real life to friends or relatives and in some instances we may not even know why people split up or separated or divorced we just judge their actions. Their decision to take happiness for however long it may be should be an example to all of us and appreciate the courage it takes for otherwise healthy people to admit they have gene for a terrible disease. The story of Grace and Max was a great read and gave a lot to think about in real life.

Oh, I really wanted to get into this book. I have read books by SMW and her stories are 'charming' and can help the reader connect with real- life emotions-- so long as you can look beyond the endless sap. Also, her heroines are usually given to quite the theatrical performance. Sigh. This book is no exception. Expect drama early on from the oh-so-sensitive heroine and this time a stellar performance from the perfectly gorgeous but "very moody" hero. And then of course, buckets of sap follow. Expected and typical. I decided that my time with this book had to come to a forced end.
Unfortunately for me, I just completed literature that was far better so it adversely dimmed my view of what I believe would have been an enjoyable read. (Still, I believe this book is overrated.) Anyway, you might enjoy it. That's if you don't read a more superb book first.
