I saw a censored version of this movie on TV, with all the sex and violence taken out. You couldn't tell what was going on.

This is the David Lean movie that the critics love to hate. Ryan is a despicable character, a liar, a braggart, a hypocrite and a traitor. Most of Rosie's grief is entirely due to her father's moral weakness. Robert Bolt's script just doesn't provide enough of a story to fill a three hour running time plus intermission. If a relatively unknown up and coming director had produced this film, the critics would have probably given it mild praise, but they held David Lean to a much higher standard and he did not deliver. To David Lean's credit his casting of Robert Mitchum of all people for the role of Rosie's meek husband, Charles, was masterly, he plays the antithesis of his usual shady, sinister roles. Sarah Miles was well cast too, she had a seamy reputation for being a loose-living tart off camera. The movie received a cool reception at the box office too. David Lean did not take this flop well and 14 years elapsed before his next (and final) movie "A Passage to India". Life is too short to be wasting 14 years sulking. By the time Lean felt motivated to make a movie based on Joseph Conrad's novel "Nostromo" he had left it too late and his health problems overwhelmed him. "Nostromo" would have been a herculean (Hercule Lean!) task, the book is long and turgid and it is doubtful whether Lean could have pulled it off even had he tackled the project while still in his prime. Lean was not an easy person to work with.

A true classic (originally filmed in 1970, and digitally remastered version in 2006), this movie fairly swoons with glorious imagery and exquisitely nuanced characters in an age-old tale - along with absolutely terrifying scenes of villagers in a sea storm and plenty of ruled-by-the-iron-fist-of-Catholicism old Irish ways.

Great David Lean high end Hollywood film production. Has overture before film starts, intermission music, etc.

Fabulous Irish sea scapes!

Interesting to see Robert Mitchum go a bit Irish and I did enjoy John Mills as Michael, the village idiot.

A sweeping saga in the true sense of the word - worth a watch!

Magnificent piece of film work by Director David Lean. You won't find a movie that shows the beauty of the Irish coast line like "Ryan's Daughter". You won't find a movie that shows how prejudice can tear apart a small village. The cast and script are outstanding. Every cast member comes out with a performance of a lifetime. Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles are especially good. Although the movie is three hours long, I wanted it to go on and on. The characters had captured my imagination. David Lean was one of the Best Directors of All TIme and "Ryan's Daughter" is a film masterpiece!

Terrible script by Robert Bolt, terrible and inappropriate musical score by Maurice Jarre -- couldn't David Lean have insisted on authentic Irish music and/or used Arnold Bax's Celtic Twilight inspired symphonies for the soundtrack? Bad acting from the once-trendy Christopher Jones and bad hamming it up from the once-great Trevor Howard. Worst of all, there's John Mills as the village idiot, in what must be the most aggressively lousy performance ever to win a "best" anything Oscar -- more proof that the academy never had any taste. His pseudo-Chaplinesque mugging insults the art of silent film acting. Sarah Miles, however, is good; Robert Mitchum is quietly spectacular, as is the coastal scenery. But they can't pull this off alone.

Outstanding film by David Lean about a young woman's desire to find fulfillment in a small Irish village occupied by the British. The townspeople reminded me of those in "Zorba the Greek." At times they were frightening, as when the tradition of men kissing the bride after the wedding begins to get out of hand. At other times they were courageous and passionate, as when they braved a storm to support a cause. Beautiful scenery, esp of the mountains and of the sea during a storm.
The one drawback was the music, which was overwrought.
Extras were a bonus.

Not a great movie overall, but John Mills will break your heart without ever even saying a word.
