This a wonderful, very thorough, research about: explorers from various countries; sailers; esprit de corps - and at times the lack of it; foreign nations, and most importantly, the evolution of saling vessels - from small like the Hawai'ian wa'a kaukahi to whaling boats, through to the large European and American wood and iron-clad ships. The chapters 'Wine,' 'Women,' and 'Song' are an insightful review of people "isolated" for long periods on a unforgiving ocean. Wonderful reading!
