When Esperanza and Mama are forced to flee to the bountiful region of Aguascalientes, Mexico, to a Mexican farm labor camp in California, they must adjust to a life without fancy dresses and servants they were accustomed to on Rancho de las Rosas. Now they must confront the challenges of hard work, acceptance by their own people, and economic difficulties brought on by the Great Depression. When Mama falls ill and a strike for better working conditions threatens to uproot their new life, Esperanza must relinquish her hold on the past and learn to embrace a future ripe with the riches of family and community.

This book has such great character development and the narration pulled me in from the very beginning. Another great read from the Juvenile fiction section that is well worth a look.

I just listened to this audio book and loved it! I picked it up because I know it's a middle grade reading requirement for some schools and I was curious. It's a new classical favorite about a girl who gets uprooted from her life and adapts to a new life in America. Takes place during the 1920's and California strikes for workers of the farms.

The most amazing book that inspire me.I LOVE the ending!!!!!!My favorite phrase is "we are like the phoenix raising again with a new life ahead of." I suggest you to write another book like this one, maybe part 2.
