In April 1994 the airplane of the Hutu President of Rwanda crashes and the Hutu militias slaughter the Tutsi population. In the Ecole Technique Officielle, Christopher, a Catholic priest and Joe Connor, an idealistic English teacher give sanctuary to twenty-five hundred Rwandans survivors in the school, which is under the protection of the UN Belgian force and under siege from the Hutu militia. When the Tutsi refugees are abandoned by the UN, they are murdered by the extremist militia.

The UN forces were placed in Rwanda to monitor the implementation of the Arusha Accords that would establish a transitional power-sharing government of Hutu and Tutsi. However, the shooting down of the President's airplane on April 6, 1994 prompted the Presidential Guard to run amok followed by armed Hutu paramilitary and youth gangs. For a good history of this tragedy I recommend reading 'Conspiracy to Murder: the Rwandan genocide' by Linda Melvern (London: Verso, 2004). As this superb docu-drama illustrates the French, the Americans and the Security Council of the UN were either complicit or negligent in this tragedy. Melvern presents important Canadian connections in the genocide too. Superb, gut-wrenching acting!

It is like a holocaust of the African version.
The conflicts between the warring tribes---Hutus and Tutsis---turned into one of the bloodiest genocides.
According to the film, 800,000 Tutsis were massacred.
The UN troops didn't help at all, and they simply escaped.
Why did the UN send those peace-keeping soldiers in the first place?
I was totally stunned and puzzled.

This movie was entertaining but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”.
