I'm off on a gay fiction tangent, and I'm not sure why. However, it is nice to be introduced to a writer such as White, well-known in the genre, I suppose. Regardless of the subject, white has a keen knack for description, especially with the characters in the story.

The book was written in 1982, and has gained following as the gay movement has earned recognition. It is coming of age fiction, founded in his Midwestern US upbringing. It is a frankly honest story, and I appreciated the writing given the context of its era of publication. The struggles of the young boy are told from within his head, without any deception as to the nature of his sexuality. He may fudge to his friends, conquests and clergy, but he never really lies to himself.

This is the first of a trilogy, and I will read-on. I'm interested to experience more from the author.
